Drake’s New Richard Mille Watch

In order to get the perfect timepiece, the rapper has shown he is willing to go to any lengths.

His birthday week wouldn’t be complete without another over-the-top watch.

Dave Bling posted photos of him and the rapper on Instagram on Thursday night. The post wasn’t just to show off that they were hanging out; he also wanted to show off the new timepiece he’d helped secure for the emcee—a Richard Mille that is almost entirely see-through.

Drake hit the HOTLINE BLING to prove his LOVER BOY status!” wrote the jeweler, whose real name is Dimitry Shimanov. “History has been made! Sapphire Museum Style Richard Mille once for the culture! Commissioned by the 47th Street GOD!”

While it’s hard to get a good look at the watch in the pictures of Drake and Shimanov, the jeweler helpfully included a close-up of the chronograph (as Drake himself, on his Instagram Story). The image shows a Richard Mille watch with a sapphire crystal case, making it basically see-through. RM 56-02 was introduced in 2014 and has a one-of-10 number, according to obsessive Drake chronicler DJ Akademiks. Even though that model also has a sapphire crystal case, we don’t think it’s the right one.

Drake’s watch looks more like RM056, the first sapphire crystal watch to be produced in the world in 2012. The timepiece, a split-seconds chronograph with a tourbillion, looks similar enough to the RM 56-02 at first glance, but its dial is a lot more colorful: it has a yellow small seconds indicator, a black tachymeter, and a red “RM056” stamp on its crystal. In Shimanov’s photos, Drake’s version includes a tachymeter and clear crown band in a rich midnight blue to match his coat.

One of the key differences between the watches is that the RM 56-02 retails for $2.2 million, whereas the RM056 costs $1.65 million. There were only five ever made, and they were all sold before they were released. Nine years later, it must have set the rapper back a great deal.

Getting the watch he wants has been no problem for the rapper. A diamond-encrusted Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse, like one Queen Elizabeth wore in an official portrait from 1984, was Drake’s last watch he had shown off on social media before the translucent Richard Mille. Drake gets what he wants.
