Hong Kong Tycoon’s $35 Million Trousdale Estates

Tom and Ruth Chapman have successfully sold their Beverly Hills home for roughly $35.3 million despite a nationwide slump in the luxury housing market. While well under the $42 million the married English fashion moguls originally asked, that price is still far above the $24 million they paid just five years ago for the place, and it is also one of the most expensive per-square-foot deals ever recorded in Trousdale Estates, a Beverly Hills neighborhood known for its midcentury modern houses.

Fashion Entrepreneurs Want $42 Million for Their Beverly Hills Home - WSJOriginally built in 1962, this structure was completely rebuilt in the late 1970s, making it a midcentury modern. It was ripped apart and rebuilt again between 2014 and 2016, and even though the most recent renovation was completed right before the Chapmans purchased the property, they gave it another thorough renovation, hiring Studio Shamshiri to add a media room and replace the kitchen.

There are more than 6,000 square feet of space inside this very bespoke mansion. According to the listing, notable features include a reception room, a plush study, a master suite with a poolside veranda and a pool house that also serves as a guesthouse. The Chapmans replaced the previous owner’s concrete decking in the backyard with a manicured garden and grassy lawn. Almost the entire city skyline is visible from this hillside home, from Downtown Los Angeles to the Pacific Ocean.

There is no word yet on whether the Chapmans, who founded MatchesFashion and cashed out for nearly $500 million, plan to buy another Los Angeles residence. The couple still maintains an elegant home in their native U.K., in London’s affluent Wimbledon district.
