Flea’s $9.8 Million LA Compound

This hilltop property features two residences, a cabin, a pool, and plenty of outdoor living space.

A recent purchase of a $14 million Mullholland Drive spread by musician and budding real estate mogul Michael “Flea” Balzary—bassist and Red Hot Chili Peppers founder—has led him to list another property in the LA area. In Los Angeles, the architectural, hilltop compound offers incredible privacy in large part because of its funky, cinematic design, and is listed for $9.8 million.

Inside Flea's Custom Hilltop Home in Los AngelesOne of the residences on the six-acre property is the Dorothy Serulnic Residence, designed by the prolific Austrian-American architect Richard Neutra, a prominent modernist. For his then-secretary Dorothy Serulnic and her husband, George, Neutra built the home in 1953. There are two bedrooms in this 1,350-square-foot, two-bedroom guest home, but it has modern updates. Additionally, Neutra-designed built-in features include a sofa with a record player, shelving systems, desks, a sliding breakfast nook, and more. The glass walls frame magnificent views of the city and mountains, while the fireplace is reminiscent of the 1950s.

In 2009, the property’s former owners commissioned Los Angeles-based architect Michael Maltzan to build the second structure; Flea wanted to continue Maltzan’s vision, so he hired him to build the 875-square-foot addition in 2021.

In addition to double-layered, UV-protected glass walls and windows, Maltzan incorporated many features from the original Neutra house, such as wooden furniture and flooring. Maltzan designed the layout in a series of triangles and polygons, taking each person on a journey throughout the space and around an interior courtyard garden. There are several notable features, such as industrial-style concrete walls and a curvilinear penny-tiled bath in the primary suite, as well as massive geometric skylights and a flat roof. Also inside are two offices and a den.

There is an outdoor movie pavilion with a windscreen, a catering kitchen, a 50-foot lap pool, and a redwood-clad cabin built by artist Peter Staley, perfect for those who enjoy spending time outdoors.

Flea acquired the compound in 2018 for roughly $4.3 million, according to Dirt, and has since added a pool, a cabin, and a Maltzan-designed addition.

Compass’ Sherri Rogers, Elisa Ritt, Anthony Stellini, and Asher Ehsani are listing the pedigree property.
