With no deep-pocketed off-market buyers willing to purchase his sprawling Maryland estate after it has been on the open market privately for about five years, Washington Commanders owner Dan Snyder has put the estate on the open market for $49 million with Heather Corey and Michael Rankin of TTR Sotheby’s International Realty.
In 2000, the 58-year-old advertising and marketing mogul became a billionaire professional sports tycoon after acquiring the estate from Jordan’s King Hussein and Queen Noor. The deal reportedly sent about $300 million into his coffers about the same time he sold the communications company he co-founded with his sister to a French media and advertising company. Additionally, the Maryland native bought the Commanders, then known as the Redskins, for $340 million at the same time. A name change took place in early 2022 to reflect the new identity of the team.
As Snyder and Tanya sought to establish some baronial roots, they purchased half a dozen nearby parcels and hired the architectural firm John Ike and interior designer Geoffrey Bradfield to build their four-story chateau-style house on 15 acres of lush, manicured grounds near the Potomac. Palatial mansion completed in 2004 is set at the end of a two-mile long driveway, covered in French milled limestone, and topped with slate roofs. Over its roughly 30,000 square feet, there are five bedrooms and six bathrooms, along with four powder rooms.
A double-height reception hall and an expansive living and dining room are serviced by what marketing material describes as a “true commercial grade chef’s kitchen,” beyond the intimate entrance vestibule and grandiose limestone fireplace. There is also an eight-sided, glass-roofed breakfast solarium and a family room, which are more intimate spaces. Moreover, the ground floor also features an office, a spa lounge, and a gymnasium, the latter of which is housed in another eight-sided and glass-roofed solarium.
A total of four guest bedrooms share one en-suite bathroom on the second floor, while the main suite occupies the entire top floor. This multi-room suite features two exquisitely crafted baths, a sumptuous, mirrored dressing room, a spacious wood-paneled office with built-in bookshelves and a banker’s green marble fireplace, as well as a separate sitting room and a bedroom with floor-to-ceiling windows that lead to a glass-railed terrace overlooking the river.
On this level, there is a mahogany-paneled club room bar and lounge area, a cellar with marble floors that is climatized for wine storage, a home theater that was installed in 2017 for professional use, and back-of-house office spaces for the staff.
