Rossinavi’s Concept Yacht Powered by Electricity

Taking inspiration from marine life, the eco-yacht is designed to be ecologically friendly.

A fully electric catamaran yacht concept, Sea Cat 40, has been revealed by Rossinavi, the Italian shipbuilder with a reputation for sleek design and precision engineering.

It was inspired by the ability of phytoplankton, a type of marine algae, to store energy during the day and release it at night as bioluminescent light. The upper deck of the Sea Cat 40 has advanced solar panels that convert solar energy into electricity during the sunlight hours.

Through the use of smart AI technology, the 130-ft boat can be programmed to use 80% solar energy, with the remaining power provided by diesel-electric, thus preserving battery life. Sea Cat 40 could travel 3,850nm at a speed of 8kn using this approach, with minimal environmental impact. However, she is also capable of running on entirely electric energy during shorter trips.

Sea Cat’s energy-saving capabilities, however, have been enhanced by Rossinavi. The owner can minimize their overall carbon footprint not only by fully electrifying her propulsion and onboard activities, but also by transferring the energy generated onboard to a mainland home.

Electric power also reduces carbon emissions and protects ocean habitats. As opposed to diesel engines, electric engines are virtually silent, making them able to glide through the ocean without a trace. Underwater noise emissions can cause damage to both marine animals and plants. It will also create a far more relaxing onboard experience if the engine is silent.

“The idea is to create a link between nature, electricity and futurism. Supported by the most advanced technologies, Sea Cat 40 is able to offer excellent performance while prioritizing the environment, a real challenge for the future of boating and a milestone for the shipyard,” Federico Rossi, Rossinavi’s chief operating officer, said.

It was Rossinavi who enlisted the help of Italian naval architect Fulvio De Simoni to design the sleek exterior and interior of the catamaran. With five bedrooms, including an owner’s cabin, the catamaran’s interior will be characterized by modern lines and open spaces, matching her futuristic technology. The ship will be lighter due to its sharp aluminum hull, which will further reduce its environmental impact.
