Wait is Over! Orient Express Superyachts is Coming

Accor’s opulent cruise liners may soon transition from mere fantasy to tangible reality.

In January of last year, the esteemed French hospitality conglomerate unveiled plans for a novel Orient Express vessel set to debut in the spring of 2026. Presently, it is engaged in discussions with investment firm Dubai Holding to secure funding for the approximate $867 million (€800 million) development of this vessel along with another, as reported by the Financial Times. Should the agreement come to fruition, Dubai Holding would assume majority ownership in the property company responsible for these luxury yachts, thereby enabling Accor to remove these assets from its balance sheet, according to individuals familiar with the matter.

While various parties have participated in investment deliberations, negotiations with Dubai Holding purportedly stand at a more advanced stage. The investment entity, overseen by Emirati ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al-Maktoum, boasts assets valued at around $35 billion and already holds ownership of the prestigious Jumeirah luxury hotel chain. Last year, it inked a deal with Accor to spearhead the rollout of hotels in the Emirate. Though nothing has been finalized, these developments underscore the escalating interest of Middle Eastern investors in the luxury domain. Investment funds associated with the leaders of the UAE and Saudi Arabia have injected billions into hospitality and tourism ventures in recent times, signaling a concerted effort by Gulf nations to diversify their economies beyond oil.

Turning attention to the Orient Express fleet itself, the duo of branded vessels is being crafted by French shipbuilder Chantiers de l’Atlantique, with slated launches in 2026 and 2027, respectively. The inaugural ship, christened the Orient Express Silenseas, spans an impressive 722 feet, poised to claim the title of the world’s largest sailing yacht upon its unveiling, according to Accor. Notably, Silenseas diverges from the traditional concept of a yacht, boasting accommodations and amenities more akin to those found on a cruise ship. Housing 54 sumptuous suites, alongside a clandestine speakeasy bar, two lavish swimming pools, two fine dining establishments, and a serene spa, the vessel promises a truly indulgent experience.

Moreover, Silenseas is designed with environmental sustainability in mind. Equipped with a pioneering SolidSail system featuring three tilting masts each exceeding 300 feet in height and three rigid sails spanning nearly 5,000 square feet, the vessel can harness wind power for propulsion under favorable conditions. In instances requiring additional thrust, advanced engines will seamlessly engage, resulting in reduced emissions compared to conventional diesel-powered ships and virtually noiseless navigation, hence the moniker “Silenseas.” With ticket prices reaching up to $21,700 per voyage, exclusivity is assured.

Accor’s foray into the cruise industry is not an isolated endeavor. Renowned brands including Ritz Carlton, Belmond, Aman, and Four Seasons are investing substantial sums to replicate the opulent hotel experience at sea aboard new superyachts—an evolution we eagerly welcome.
