Foiling Jet Ski ‘Flies’ Silently and Emissions-Free on Waves

In the maritime world, foiling technology is gaining significant traction, and various watercraft are now embracing the concept of literally taking flight across the waters. The most recent innovation in this realm comes from Boundary Layer Technologies, who have introduced a remarkable Jet Ski known as the Valo Hyperfoil.

This pioneering personal watercraft (PWC) draws inspiration from the world of foiling vessels, which are becoming increasingly prevalent in the realms of air, land, and sea travel. The Valo Hyperfoil, crafted from a blend of carbon, titanium, and stainless steel, may outwardly resemble a traditional Jet Ski. However, it possesses the remarkable ability to “fly” gracefully above the water’s surface, offering an experience devoid of noise, emissions, and disruptive wakes, as asserted by the San Francisco-based startup.

Boundary Layer Technologies’ CEO, Ed Kearney, articulated the vision behind the Valo Hyperfoil, stating, “The idea behind the Valo was to take the next step forward for marine mobility and to do it with a craft that both draws on a clean, all-electric powertrain while offering riders the thrill of high-speed foil flight.”

The Valo distinguishes itself through the incorporation of carbon-fiber hydrofoils situated at both the front and rear of the vessel. The rear set of foils is paired with a high-performance 45 kW electric propulsion system, enabling the craft to reach impressive speeds of up to 35 knots. This results in exhilarating acceleration and agile cornering capabilities. To ensure safe, level flight above the water’s surface in various conditions, the company has developed proprietary Skyride flight control software. This software orchestrates minute adjustments to the foils hundreds of times per second.

Additionally, active ride control has been integrated to instill confidence and comfort in seafarers of all proficiency levels. To further enhance the experience, the Valo boasts a vegan leather seat.

In terms of endurance, the Valo is more than capable. With a single charge, it can operate for over two hours, providing a range exceeding 60 nautical miles at a cruising speed of 27 knots. What’s more, the craft is designed for easy transportation and can be accommodated on a standard trailer.

Reo Baird, the Chief Technology Officer, shared insights about the Valo experience, describing it as truly exceptional. He likened it to skiing in deep powder snow, emphasizing the profound sensation of speed without the typical noise associated with conventional watercraft. It’s a sensation that makes it feel like the future has arrived.

The company has already received advanced orders totaling $3.3 million, indicating a strong demand for this groundbreaking technology. The initial units are expected to be delivered in early 2024. The Valo Hyperfoil will be formally introduced during a press presentation at the upcoming Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) scheduled for October 26th.

In summary, the Valo Hyperfoil by Boundary Layer Technologies represents a remarkable leap forward in marine mobility. By combining an eco-friendly all-electric powertrain with the excitement of high-speed foil flight, it ushers in a new era of water-based adventure. With its advanced technology and outstanding capabilities, it’s poised to make waves in the world of personal watercraft.
