The $22 Million Wine Country Retreat in Northern California

Set atop Napa Valley’s Mount Veeder, this remarkable estate sprawls across 130 acres, featuring a distinctive residence that artfully blends modernism, art deco, and deconstructivism, now available for $22 million.

Originally designed for the late Thomas Lundstrom, an heir to the Wasa Swedish crisp bread fortune, the home boasts unconventional architectural elements. The front entrance evokes the grandeur of the Temple of Dendur, while a cantilevered second floor and a primary bedroom with a triangular configuration add to its unique character. Stories abound of Lundstrom hosting the Dalai Lama at this mountaintop sanctuary, where yoga sessions took place atop the five-story tower adjacent to the pool.

This strikingly white residence, formerly known as Villa Zapu and featured in the 1998 architectural publication “Twentieth-century Architecture: The Structures That Shaped the Century,” has been in the possession of San Francisco political consultant turned commercial real estate and hospitality magnate Clint Reilly and his wife Janet since 1999. The Reillys were drawn to the home’s unconventional design, which stands in stark contrast to the prevalent Tuscan-style villas in Napa Valley.

The couple, who used the estate as a weekend retreat, holiday getaway, and corporate retreat venue, adorned the home with iconic Pop Art pieces by luminaries like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. A sculpture by Fletcher Benton graces the expansive front lawn. Both the Benton sculpture and an extensive wine library are included in the property sale, as indicated by listings held by Arthur Goodrich of Sotheby’s International Realty, St. Helena Brokerage. Reilly also expressed a willingness to consider separate sales of the artworks within the home.

Situated at the culmination of a meandering driveway, traversing the estate’s eight acres of vineyards yielding approximately 500 cases of wine annually, and accessed via a winding path leading from the circular motor court, the residence encompasses four bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms within its approximately 6,300 square feet of living space. The home features a fireside living room, an intimate paneled library, a modern and well-appointed kitchen, and a gym.
