Kirsten Dunst’s Former Manhattan Penthouse for $7 Million

Two years following her Oscar nomination for her performance in The Power of the Dog, Kirsten Dunst is poised to make her highly anticipated comeback to the silver screen with the forthcoming A24 action thriller Civil War. Coinciding with this news, the actress’s former penthouse in New York City is once again available for purchase.

Priced just under $7 million, this industrial-chic apartment is situated atop a pre-war co-op in the Hudson Square neighborhood of lower Manhattan, specifically at 533 Canal Street. Dunst, whose breakthrough role came in the 1994 horror film Interview with the Vampire, acquired the eighth-floor abode for $3 million back in 2007, as initially reported by The New York Post. She later sold the property in 2018 for a profitable $4.4 million, following which it briefly transitioned into a rental, commanding $12,500 per month.

The former residence of Dunst boasts oversized arched windows, soaring 11-foot ceilings, wide-plank hardwood flooring, and abundant exposed brick. According to Laura Weinkam of Corcoran, who holds the listing, the two-bedroom, two-bath apartment recently underwent a comprehensive renovation.

Among the notable additions is an open chef’s kitchen outfitted with high-end appliances, gleaming marble countertops, and custom blue cabinetry. The primary suite has undergone a complete transformation, featuring a custom-designed wardrobe leading to a windowed walk-in closet. Additionally, the ensuite bathroom has been revamped with a freestanding vintage soaking tub, a separate shower stall, custom mosaic tiled floors, and a towel warmer.

The secondary bedroom, separated from the living room by sliding glass and brass panels, currently serves as a library. However, it includes a Murphy bed discreetly nestled within a wall of built-ins to accommodate guests. Adjacent to this space is the second bathroom.

Dating back to 1911, the boutique building holds historical significance as the former site of the infamous Canal Zone party in 1978. Organized by Stan Peskett, Michael Holman, and Fab 5 Freddy, the event took place at Peskett’s 5,000-square-foot loft and was attended by the late Jean-Michel Basquiat, who was then an unknown graffiti artist.

Over the years, this co-op, also identified by its alternate address of 477 Washington Street, has attracted several notable celebrities. Notably, it was once home to former R.E.M. frontman Michael Stipe and director Gus Van Sant. Additionally, it was rumored that ex-brothers-in-law Casey Affleck and Joaquin Phoenix shared an apartment in the building, which changed hands in 2020 for $3.1 million.
