Flea’s Offbeat Compound North of Los Angeles for $7 Million

In early 2022, after acquiring a lavish $14 million estate nestled in the steep mountains above Beverly Hills, and already possessing a cozy retreat in the exclusive Malibu Colony gated community, Michael “Flea” Balzary made the decision to list his distinctive architectural residence tucked away in the La Crescenta foothills of Los Angeles for $9.8 million. Now, a little over two years later, the Red Hot Chili Pepper bassist’s remarkable property in the unincorporated community near Glendale has reappeared on the market, according to TMZ, this time seeking just under $7 million.

Despite the reduced price, it still represents a significant increase from the $4.3 million Balzary paid contemporary artists Lari Pittman and Roy Dowell for the property back in 2018. However, this updated listing now includes an 875-square-foot addition constructed on the land in 2021, along with a pool and cabin added in 2020.

Nestled approximately 20 miles north of Downtown Los Angeles, amidst a meticulously crafted succulent garden bordering the Angeles National Forest, the hilltop compound is discreetly nestled down a lengthy driveway. It boasts two primary residences—an airy main house designed by L.A.-based architect Michael Maltzan in 2009, and a 1950s home custom-built by renowned modernist architect Richard Neutra for his secretary Dorothy Serulnic and her husband George.

Additional features on the property include a striking accessory cabin enveloped entirely in redwood, an outdoor movie pavilion, and breathtaking views of the mountains and city lights from every angle. The main residence, commissioned by Pittman and Dowell, is characterized by an impressive seven-sided structure wrapped around a central courtyard, complemented by the recent Maltzan addition. Featured in Architectural Record, it has earned acclaim with three awards from the American Institute of Architects.

The primary bedroom stands out with its curvilinear penny-tiled bath, while the space also encompasses an office, a den, and ample built-in storage. Outdoors, a Johnston Vidal lap pool extends 50 feet, while the open-air movie pavilion features a wind screen and catering kitchen.

Dubbed the “Dorothy Serulnic Residence,” the original dwelling boasts two bedrooms and a full bath within 1,350 square feet of meticulously restored living space, featuring walls of glass and a stone fireplace. Neutra-designed built-ins are prominently featured throughout, including a sofa system complete with a record player and concealed speakers, along with various desks, shelving systems, a dining room table, sliding breakfast nook, and vanity.

Branden Williams of The Beverly Hills Estates, along with Rayni Williams of The Beverly Hills Estates, and Sherri Rogers and Anthony Stellini of Compass, are representing the property, which is aptly described as “your own midcentury space station right here in Los Angeles.”
