They have unveiled the electric hybrid superyacht “Kairos” as one example of their efforts to develop more environmentally friendly boats.

It was thought that time was sequential or chronological according to the Greek calendar, as shown by a sundial. Kairos, on the other hand, was a crucial or opportune time. In the Bible, Kairos is described as a time of transformation and change. It is a time for the accomplishment of an important task.

With an eye on creating an E-Hybrid propulsion system in a state-of-the-art hull which impacts the way yachts are designed, three of the world’s most significant superyacht players are now working together on a maritime Kairos edition.

It is expected that the collaboration between Pininfarina and Oceanco, a Dutch superyacht builder known for its Ferrari designs, and Lateral Naval Architects’ technical design will be a breakthrough in sustainable design. As part of Oceanco’s NXT initiative to promote sustainability and innovation, the 295-foot Kairos will be powered by batteries.‍

In describing Kairos, Paolo Pininfarina, chairman of the Pininfarina Group, stated that, “Our passion as designers is to imagine new spaces that will enchant everyone onboard.”

The partnership between Oceanco, Seaco, and Allied is praised by Oceanco CEO Marcel Onkenhout. “Once an Oceanco NXT yacht is endorsed, it will give owners the assurance they are receiving high-quality lifestyle onboard in harmony with new perspectives on sustainability,” he said.

During a panel discussion on what NXT might look like, Oceanco announced that different projects would be borne from collaborations between multiple designers and Oceanco. The builder of such famous superyachts as Dar, Bravo Eugenia, and Kaos revealed its NXT initiative in October 2020. In addition to partnering with companies unrelated to yachting, Onkenhout said his shipyard is looking for sustainable technology to be used on new superyacht designs.

According to Onkenhout, tomorrow can begin today.
