‍Rolls-Royce’s Electric Plane as the World’s Fastest Electric Vehicle

Moreover, it broke three world records.

An electric vehicle that is the fastest in the world has taken to the skies.

During a series of tests at the UK Ministry of Defense’s Boscombe Down testing facility in Wiltshire, England, Rolls Royce’s all-electric aircraft, dubbed the Spirit of Innovation, reached a top speed of 387.4 mph. As a result, the Spirit of Innovation is the world’s fastest electric vehicle, according to the company.‍

Three new world records were also set during the runs, which took place on November 16, by the battery-powered aircraft, surpassing a Siemens electric plane that reached 210 mph in 2017. Over 3 kilometers, the Spirit of Innovation achieved 345.5 mph, comfortably surpassing the previous record by 132 mph. Over 15 kilometers, it achieved 330 mph, which is 182 mph faster than the old one. In the end, it reached 3,000 meters in around 3.4 minutes, a whole minute faster than the previous record.‍

Although the numbers have been submitted for verification by the World Air Sports Federation, aircraft have a lot of spirit, and Rolls-Royce is not afraid to admit it. The plane is equipped with the most powerful propulsion battery pack ever assembled in aerospace, in addition to a 400 kW (536 hp) powertrain consisting of three motors

In addition to power and speed, the zero-emissions aircraft was developed by Rolls-Royce as part of its Accelerating the Electrification of Flight (ACCEL) program, which was announced in 2019. A future of low-carbon flight is the goal of this initiative, which is partly funded by the UK government and the Aerospace Technology Institute. Also, the global climate summit of recently called for emissions cuts by 2030 is the perfect timing, too.‍

“Following the world’s focus on the need for action at COP26, this is another milestone that will help make ‘jet zero’ a reality and supports our ambitions to deliver the technology breakthroughs society needs to decarbonize transport across air, land and sea,” said Warren East, CEO.

Air taxi batteries, for example, require characteristics similar to what was developed for the Spirit of Innovation, according to Rolls-Royce.

Maybe we’re not too far from 380 mph Rolls-Royce flying taxis.
