Just 10 examples exist, including this brash timepiece.
Michael Jordan’s collection of championship rings and gold hoops doesn’t stop there. He’s also obsessed with watches.
During last weekend’s Ally 400 race at the Nashville Superspeedway, the NBA legend and NASCAR team owner showcased his latest addition to his collection, an Urwerk UR-220 RG. Taking specific visual inspiration from one of the most famous television shows of the 1980s, Miami Vice, the timepiece is angular and bold, just as one would expect from a Swiss brand.
It was released in May as the final version of the UR-220 and features an ergonomic case made of satin-finished red gold. In addition to the rotating satellite complication that wanders the hours, a 3-D retrograde minutes hand, double power reserve indicators, and completely redesigned numerals, under its sapphire crystal, you’ll find a “dial” with wandering hours.
To complete the package, you will find an oil change indicator on the black DLC-coated caseback that shows you how long the movement has been running. A white strap crafted from rubber with Velcro fastening completes the whole package. Crocket or Tubbs would look perfectly at home wearing the watch on the show.
With 59 jewels and a single mainspring barrel energy source, Urwerk’s Calibre UR-720 movement powers the watch. The power reserve is 48 hours.
According to Urwerk’s chief designer and co-founder Martin Frei, the combination of gold and white has long been a part of fond memories.
There are only ten of Jordan’s UR-220 watches produced by Urwerk before the company closed the books on the model forever, making it particularly exclusive. As Jordan is the highest-paid athlete of all time, we imagine he didn’t hesitate to add it to his roster because each example costs around $155,000.
