A Guide of Demi Moore to Sun Valley, Idaho

Sun Valley, a place that became a significant part of my life at the behest of my ex-husband, Bruce Willis, continues to hold a special place in my heart. Before Bruce introduced me to it, I had never really heard of Sun Valley. Our first visit was when our eldest daughter, Rumer, was just 12 days old. Initially planned as a holiday spot, Sun Valley soon became more than that for me.

Now, I find myself splitting my time between Los Angeles and Idaho, with Sun Valley being the constant that remains untouched by the passing years. It’s a sanctuary where you arrive, and suddenly there’s more room to breathe, both literally and figuratively. The trio of connected towns – Ketchum, the main hub, along with Bellevue and Hailey – adds to the charm of this picturesque place. My residence is in Hailey, and the familiarity of the small-town vibe resonates with me, having grown up in a similar setting.

Sun Valley, encompassing the towns of Ketchum, Bellevue, and Hailey, exudes simplicity with a touch of cosmopolitan flair. The family-owned businesses, the quaint main streets, the majestic mountains, and the pristine air create an inviting atmosphere. Despite its rustic nature, the area boasts an art community, with Gallery Walks connecting various art galleries throughout the year. It’s a place that Ernest Hemingway called home and where his legacy still weaves through the rustic yet cosmopolitan fabric of Sun Valley.

They say the winters attract people to Sun Valley, but it’s the summers that make them stay. The landscape transforms from a blanket of white to a blanket of green, offering two distinct and captivating experiences. Averell Harriman, back in the 1930s, turned it into a ski destination, installing the world’s first chairlift in 1936. Winter invites skiing on Bald Mountain – or “Baldy” – with the iconic Sun Valley Lodge offering a picturesque setting. There’s even a separate beginner’s mountain, Dollar Mountain, where you witness adorable kids lining up for their first ski, reminiscent of my early experiences.

Sun Valley Lodge, with its rich history dating back to the 1930s, features the Duchin Lounge, an elegant and cozy bar with a vintage charm. The lodge exudes an old-school vibe, devoid of any pretentious scene – a place where no one cares about your attire. For a unique adventure, a yurt dinner in Galena, a short drive away, offers a magical experience. Cross-country skiing or snowshoeing under a full moon creates an enchanting ambiance.

In the summer, an ideal day in Sun Valley might start with a refreshing hike in Adams Gulch before the day heats up. A juice stop at Nourishme in Ketchum or lunch at Aroma could follow. Bigwood Bread bakery, known for its excellent bread, is another delightful option. Atkinsons’, a family-run grocery store, is a local landmark offering a variety of goodies. And, of course, Grumpy’s, known for its burgers and fries, is a must-visit – a favorite among my kids. Maude’s Coffee and Clothes, a charming coffee spot owned by Jacob Frehling, offers a selection of outdoor-casual pieces.

One of the highlights of the Sun Valley experience is the Sun Valley Music Festival, featuring annual free concerts. Blankets and chairs are laid out, picnics are spread, and the audience is treated to incredible music amidst the backdrop of mountains. Nature plays a symphony, creating a perfect setting. On the base of my property lies a river, a summer hotspot known as the Redneck Riviera – a great swimming hole if you’re brave enough. Kayaking, river-rafting, fly-fishing – the options are endless. The landscape often surprises me; I might witness a herd of elk in my backyard.

Despite my divorce from Bruce, we remain close. In the winter, we indulge in indoor activities like playing Mexican Train dominoes, which can get quite competitive. I find comfort in being a homebody, spending hours catching up on British crime shows like Endeavour, Inspector Morse, and anything featuring Nicola Walker.

Sun Valley also hides incredible hot springs, and while I’ve been tempted to reveal their location, part of the allure lies in the mystery. If people truly want to experience it, they must venture out and earn the privilege themselves. Sun Valley, with its timeless charm and ever-changing seasons, remains a haven where every visit feels like a breath of fresh mountain air, a pause from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
