This time, on the real estate front, the Great One has done it again. 6.7 acres of the estate owned by ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky and his longtime wife Janet have sold for $17.6 million. It was well below Gretzky’s initial asking price of $22.9 million last year, but still a whopping $4.1 million more than he paid in 2013.
Besides being a sentimental investment for the Gretzkys, this is actually their second time selling the property. The couple built the house in 2002, commissioning mega-mansion specialist Richard Landry to design the contemporary take on an antebellum Colonial estate. They sold the property for .5 million to the notoriously troubled former MLB player Lenny Dykstra in 2007, who lost it to foreclosure several years later. Less than a year later, Gretzky paid $13.5 million for the giant compound at auction, flipped it to a non-famous couple.
This time around, the buyers are more financially stable than Dykstra – Eric and Joanna Miller. The daughter of Donald Sterling, the owner of the L.A. Clippers for more than three decades, is Joanna Miller, née Sterling. As a result of public outcry over racist recordings, Sterling sold the team for a then-record $2 billion to Steve Ballmer in 2014.
The former Gretzky estate is located behind guarded gates within the prestigious Sherwood Country Club community, offering all the luxurious amenities a famous athlete might expect. In addition to an enormous marble kitchen with SubZero and Wolf appliances, there’s a butler’s pantry as large as a bedroom, a billiards room, a state-of-the-art fitness center (not shown in the listing), and a master suite with a sitting room and two bathrooms. A Vegas-sized porte-cochère sets the stage for what lies inside.
Furthermore, the estate includes approximately 13,000 square feet of living space, including a main house, two separate guesthouses, and a garage/staff building. A championship tennis court with viewing pavilion, outdoor pizza oven, BBQ center, and parking for dozens of cars make the place ideal for large-scale entertaining. A large pool and spa are located on the brick terrace for cooling off. The lavish grounds feature manicured gardens, a cabana, and stunning views of the Santa Monica Mountains and Lake Sherwood.
However, records reveal the Gretzkys still own two modest homes in Missouri and Palm Harbor, Florida.
