An Electric Flying Car Will Race in Australia

Airspeeder eVTOLs will compete in a full grid in Australia.

Two years after debuting the first eVTOL race car powered by eVTOL technology, Alauda is now ready to race.

Airspeeder Mk3 will race this year alongside a full grid of identical speedsters in a new series Down Under, according to an announcement from the Australian aviation firm.

A full-sized, remotely controlled electric racing car, the Mk3 is reportedly capable of reaching speeds up to 75 mph (120 km/h), billed as the “world’s first flying electric racing car.” Designed after classic F1 machines, the racer has a lightweight carbon-fiber fuselage and frame that tips the scales at just 200 pounds (100KG).

The Mk3’s internal powertrain produces 96 kW, which boosts acceleration with a thrust-to-weight ratio over two. As well as improving maneuverability and stability, the speedster is arranged in an “octocopter X formation.” This means the vehicle will be able to perform the same hairpin turns as the cars on the Albert Park Circuit, as well as move vertically. In the event of a malfunctioning rotor or battery system, this configuration ensures that the vehicle can land safely, according to Alauda.‍

This technology creates a “virtual forcefield” around the Mk3, which allows it to race close yet safely while being controlled by expert ground operators.

In late 2021, the Airspeeder series will see an entire grid of these flying machines competing for the checkered flag, which is essential. Australians are currently building ten more Mk3 craft at their Adelaide facility and will supply them to racing teams in the near future. Before the start of an international racing calendar, Alauda says the first pre-season tests will take place in Australia.‍

As a bonus, Alauda plans to deliver a flying car in 2022 that we can actually sit in. To make matters even more interesting, the Mk4 Airspeeder will also be race-ready.

“It is competition that drives progress and our racing series is hastening the arrival of technology that will transform clean-air passenger transport, logistics and even advanced air mobility for medical applications,” said Matthew Pearson, the company’s founder. “The world’s first electric flying car races will take place this year and will be the most exciting and progressive motorsport on the planet.”
