20 Boom Supersonic Jets are Coming to American Airlines

The supersonic jet will be operated by American Airlines for the second time.

With its supersonic flights, American Airlines is doing what it does best.

An agreement was reached with Boom Supersonic today to purchase 20 of the Overture jets. The new contract includes the option for additional 40 aircraft.

In our previous report, we discussed the new images released recently of the highly anticipated Overture aircraft, which will carry 65 to 80 passengers at speeds nearly twice as fast as today’s fastest aircraft. The aircraft will also be capable of flying 600 routes in shorter timeframes, including New York to London, while using 100 percent sustainable fuel alternatives and cruising at 60,000 feet on sustainable fuel alternatives.

“We are proud to share our vision of a more connected and sustainable world with American Airlines. We believe Overture can help American deepen its competitive advantage on network, loyalty and overall airline preference through the paradigm-changing benefits of cutting travel times in half,” announced by  founder and CEO of Boom Blake Scholl.

Earlier this summer, United Airlines announced plans to purchase new Overtures for its fleet. American Airlines is the second major US airline to do so.

“Looking to the future, supersonic travel will be an important part of our ability to deliver for our customers. We are excited about how Boom will shape the future of travel for our company and our customers,” American Airlines CFO Derek Kerr said.

It will take seven years for the jet to begin transporting passengers, even though the innovative aircraft is proving to be a hot commodity. In 2025, Boom expects to launch the Overture and enter commercial service in 2029. At its North Carolina location, Boom is working on prototypes.
