Crossover production will not exceed 20 percent of Prancing Horse’s annual production.
In spite of its controversial nature, Ferrari Purosangue is already proving to be a hit.
According to Australian magazine Drive, the Italian marque has temporarily closed its order books for its first SUV because of overwhelming demand.
The Prancing Horse has reiterated loudly and clearly that it intends to remain primarily a sports car maker, even after adding an SUV to its line-up. The brand has committed to not allowing the Purosangue to exceed 20 percent of its annual production output, no matter how popular it becomes. The manufacturer has suspended reservations for the vehicle for now since it already has a two-year wait list just two-and-a-half months after its debut.
“It’s no secret that we stopped taking orders. We had such an interest without delivering one single car,” Enrico Galliera, the company’s chief marketing officer, said. “We made a decision that we thought was consistent with the positioning of Ferrari and the model.”
The Purosangue is Ferrari’s first SUV, but it’s far from a rough draft. It’s got a sleek design in line with the brand’s other vehicles and has sports car-like performance. It’s easy to see why interest is so high. Under the long hood of the SUV is a naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V-12 engine mated to a dual-clutch transmission. The engine produces 725 horsepower and 528 ft lbs of torque. It’s a beast of a vehicle that can go from zero-to-60 mph in 3.3 seconds and has a top speed of 193 mph. But it costs about $175,000 more than the Lamborghini Urus, its closest competitor.
Purosangue orders should not be delayed too much for those with foresight to place them early. If you weren’t able to reserve one before the books closed, we wouldn’t worry too much. Deliveries are expected to begin early next year. If Ferrari begins accepting orders again, we think the Purosangue will still be an appealing option.
