Southern Wind welcomes its latest addition to the fleet, the 108-foot beauty known as Gelliceaux, marking the debut of the SW108 series from the South African shipyard. This hybrid cruiser set sail from Cape Town at the end of October, embarking on a globe-trotting voyage, showcasing the perfect fusion of sustainability, efficiency, and luxury.
Described as a “smart custom” sailing yacht, the SW108 strikes an exceptional balance, offering a versatile platform that can be customized to cater to the unique desires and requirements of each seafarer. The creation of Gelliceaux was a collaborative effort between Southern Wind, Nauta Design, and Farr Yacht Design. Notably, the owners of Gelliceaux have made distinctive choices, opting for a deeper keel, a higher sail plan, and an increased sail area, setting their yacht apart from the original model.
Sebastian Allebrodt, representing A2B Marine as the project manager for the client, explained the concept of “smart custom” by highlighting how it provides a client with a proven hull platform, allowing them to make personalized modifications. These adjustments can include alterations to the interior layout and performance characteristics of the boat, making it a unique and tailored vessel.
Gelliceaux is powered by a diesel-electric propulsion system, a collaborative creation with BAE Systems. This innovative system consists of two highly efficient generators, a high-voltage lithium battery bank, and electric motors. The implementation of this technology ensures greater fuel efficiency while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions. Additionally, the yacht boasts hydrogenerating capabilities, enabling it to generate electricity while sailing, which can be used to recharge the onboard battery. This unique feature allows for extended periods of noiseless and pollution-free cruising.
Yann Dabbadie, the technical manager at Southern Wind, emphasizes the remarkable sustainability of Gelliceaux. The yacht can generate a substantial 35 kW of power while sailing at 16 knots and 25 kW while gliding at 14 knots. When cruising at speeds of 10 knots or higher, Gelliceaux has the potential to virtually extend her range indefinitely, all while maintaining the luxurious amenities that make this yacht a true marvel of sustainable sailing.
Gelliceaux is currently navigating the waters off the coast of Namibia, under the experienced command of Captain Mariano Sotelo and a crew of seasoned sailors. Captain Sotelo emphasizes that the yacht fulfills the owner’s vision of an exquisite vessel that blends beauty with safety, making it suitable for sailing with family and friends, or even participating in regattas, such as those in the Caribbean. Gelliceaux stands as a testament to exquisite design and sustainable technology, exemplifying the allure and promise of modern sailing.
