A Look Inside The Incredible Superyacht REV

Guests will enjoy a different kind of charter experience with this eco-conscious research yacht.

In a floating eco-metropolis powered by hybrid energy, you could bring the best scientific minds and equipment to secluded corners of our planet to find answers that could save our oceans. Take a look at the incredible yacht, REV Ocean, and imagine how you could be a part of it.

With a length of 600 feet, her mission is to make the ocean healthy again. It goes on to become the largest superyacht in the world, taking over the title from the 590.6-ft Azzam, which was currently the world’s largest.

As well as the super-sized ship, Nina Jensen was the former CEO of WWF Norway and marine biologist, who established the not-for-profit foundation which the super-sized ship is named after. The vessel is an important part of the organization’s strategy to raise awareness about pollution, climate change, and overfishing and spearhead the next generation of ocean solutions.

From the icy abyss of the polar regions to the equatorial waters of the Indian Ocean, REV Ocean will be equipped with the latest sampling, observation, mapping and communication equipment. ‍

A hybrid propulsion system will be used to power REV Ocean, which will have a top speed of 17.8 knots. Furthermore, she will be equipped with a lithium-ion battery pack that will power the propulsion motors during biomass sampling, thus limiting underwater acoustic pollution.

Her multidisciplinary team of designers and builders installed a variety of eco-focused gadgets in order to limit her environmental footprint, including a ‘Green Pilot’ that monitors emissions and a water treatment system that prevents species from crossing ocean boundaries. Incredibly, REV Ocean’s incinerator consumes plastics without producing harmful gases, making it one of the most innovative incineration systems around. Therefore, plastic waste does not have to be offloaded to shoreside facilities in areas with limited disposal options.

The launch of REV Ocean in 2023 has been delayed due to the global pandemic. For one-third of the year, she will be available to charter, allowing guests to take part in an immersive, once-in-a-lifetime expedition with scientific experts. In addition, any profits earned by the charity are reinvested into its ocean-saving efforts.

In spite of being a superyacht, REV Ocean is not a floating palace. There might be another superyacht out there if you’re looking for the glamour and grandeur of Azzam or Eclipse. This vessel is unapologetically different; one that stands out to offer an alternative adventure.

Stay

With 18 cabins, REV Ocean will comfortably accommodate 28 guests as a charter vessel. The designer of Tatiana’s interiors is the London studio H2 Design, which has designed the luxurious and modern interiors of the 262.5 ft superyacht Ulysees and the new 262.5 ft superyacht Tatiana, among many others.

H2’s founder Jonny Horsfield explained to Yacht Charter Fleet in 2019 that designing an interior for a vessel like REV Ocean required a fresh perspective: “It is now my challenge to deliver an interior that fits the demands of its purpose, one that is holistic in its requirement to connect to the environment around it, as well as establish a new way of thinking for a project that has no precedent,” he explained.

Despite REV Ocean’s unparalleled size (she measures 17,440 GT), Horsfield admits that fitting all the technology into such a large vessel has been a challenge. It appears that H2 has risen to the challenge, as evidenced by the impressive list of marine research equipment she plans to house on board.

While much of her interior is still a secret, it’s safe to say she won’t be as luxurious as some of her superyacht predecessors; however, this makes sense given the vessel’s purpose. “She has been designed towards a more industrial look but with a Scandinavian minimalist approach to the [details]. All the materials are simple, basic materials like concrete, wood, metal and stone,” added Horsfield.

Relax

In spite of her smaller size, REV Ocean offers many of the same luxuries as other world-class superyachts.

Guests will be able to choose from three pools, a jacuzzi, a gym, and a spa. Additionally, several observation platforms will provide unique views of polar sunrises and marine life, as well as several dining rooms and recreational spaces onboard.

On board, guests will be able to immerse themselves in groundbreaking marine research and leave the Jacuzzi behind. There will be plenty of opportunities to join scientists in their mission-critical work aboard a vessel with over 43,000 square feet dedicated to scientific research.

Aside from its impressive tenders and submersibles, this futuristic mega-vessel is also home to a number of incredible tenders. The ship has a 25-foot moon pool for lowering a three-person Triton 7500/3 series submersible into the ocean’s depths. Two helipads make it possible for REV Ocean to offer air adventures with its Airbus ACH145 helicopter.

Explore

REV Ocean’s ice-class hull makes her capable of handling remote polar regions and tropical regions. Due to her 21,120 nautical mile range, she can pretty much circumnavigate the globe without refueling, so no location is off-limits.

Originally, REV Ocean was scheduled to sail to Svalbard in 2021 on a scientific mission, home to walruses, polar bears, seals, and whales. As she awaits completion, this has been put on hold. Caribbean and Galapagos expeditions are rumored to be in the pipeline.
