The Smiling Flower Design of Takashi Murakami

All-black Hublot Classic Fusion models are sure to be collector’s items.

Takashi Murakami’s vibrant artwork has adorned Supreme and Uniqlo t-shirts, Crocs and Vans shoes, as well as Louis Vuitton handbags, but never a Swiss watch face.

Despite being sweet-talked into working with Hublot, Takashi Murakami said he became immersed in the project that resulted in the Classic Fusion Takashi Murakami All Black timepiece.‍

Thankfully, the art gods relented. Murakami, who visited the Hublot manufacture in Nyon last February and exhibited his signature smiling flower front and center, finally relented. A clever ball-bearing system devised by Hublot’s engineers allows the flower to spin around the head of the pistil at the center of the dial using more than 560 black diamonds.

The watch is powered by the Unico caliber, a self-winding movement with a power reserve of 72 hours underneath the beguiling dial. Limited to 200 pieces and priced at $27,300, the watch has a 45mm satin-finished ceramic case with a black rubber strap. Luxury watchmakers have settled the long-simmering debate over whether horology is art or craft for now.
