The Newest Radical’s Track-Only Racecar

Radical Motorsport, a British manufacturer producing fewer than 200 vehicles annually, has carved a niche presence in motorsport country clubs throughout the United States. Notably, locations like Nevada’s Spring Mountain and Arizona’s Apex Motor Club boast memberships owning over 100 Radicals each, alongside hosting rounds of the Radical Cup race series.

The SR10 stands as Radical’s top-seller, especially in North America. Initially launched in 2020, this turbocharged track car has received updates culminating in the SR10 XXR. Priced at $169,990, the SR10 XXR boasts enhanced aerodynamics, improved cooling, and a refined setup, delivering 425 hp.

At Radical’s home circuit, Donington Park, near Nottingham, England, I arrive to test drive the SR10 XXR. Amid freezing temperatures and icy rain, my anticipation is tempered by the challenging conditions. Equipped with a Radical-branded racing suit and Sparco boots, I meet my coach for the day, Shaun Doyle, an accomplished endurance racer.

Our SR10 XXR, adorned with Gulf Racing-inspired livery, features grooved wet tires for traction on the rain-soaked track. Notable updates include an LMP-inspired central fin and optional carbon-fiber components. Underneath its sleek exterior lies a spaceframe chassis, FIA-approved safety cell, and a modified 2.3-liter Ford Ecoboost engine.

As a passenger, I witness Shaun’s skillful maneuvering to warm up the tires amidst the rain-soaked circuit. Swapping seats, I acquaint myself with the SR10 XXR’s controls, guided by Shaun’s expertise. Despite the intimidating steering wheel with digital display and rotary controls, the SR10 XXR’s responsiveness is immediate, offering precise handling and formidable braking power.

However, my initial session ends abruptly with a spin onto the grass. Undeterred, I return to the track, navigating through adverse weather conditions and heavy track traffic. Despite Shaun’s guidance, I struggle to maintain composure amidst the chaos.

By the final session, the weather improves, and the track clears. With renewed confidence, I push the SR10 XXR to its limits, relishing the exhilarating experience of mastering the car’s dynamics. Despite occasional mistakes, the SR10 XXR proves to be a demanding yet rewarding machine, demanding respect while rewarding commitment.

For enthusiasts seeking a similar experience, Radical offers “arrive and drive” packages through its North American dealerships, alongside comprehensive race support. As for the rain, it’s best to leave that off the options list.
