In the vast tapestry of Earth’s animal kingdom, there exist certain creatures that defy conventional expectations, inspiring awe not through their size, beauty, or intelligence, but rather through their sheer peculiarity. Among these anomalies are specimens like the lungfish or the platypus. In the automotive realm, the Morgan Super 3 embodies this same spirit of eccentricity.

Functioning as a three-wheeled cycle car, reminiscent of Morgan’s inaugural model in 1910, the Super 3 emerged to cater to British drivers who sought an affordable alternative to traditional four-wheeled automobiles. Although it wasn’t until 1936 that Morgan incorporated a proper fourth wheel into their lineup, their three-wheeled models had already secured a solid reputation in motorsport and among driving enthusiasts.

The reintroduction of Morgan’s three-wheeler, absent since 1953, occurred in 2012. Continuing until 2018, this iteration boasted an exposed S&S V-twin engine, akin to those found in Harley-Davidson motorcycles, delivering a raw and exhilarating experience. Priced at $47,774, the Super 3, unveiled in 2022 and now accessible in the United States, marks a departure from its predecessor. It swaps out the raucous air-cooled V-twin for a longitudinally mounted Ford 1.3-liter engine, generating 118 hp and 110 ft lbs of torque. With a weight of 1,400 pounds, the Super 3 achieves a favorable power-to-weight ratio. Its transmission, a Mazda five-speed manual, ensures smooth gear shifts, propelling the vehicle from zero-to-60 mph in approximately 7.0 seconds, with a claimed top speed of 130 mph. Unlike previous Morgans, the Super 3’s floor pan and body are crafted from Superform aluminum, bidding farewell to the traditional wooden elements.

Inside the compact cockpit, occupants forge a cozy bond owing to its snug dimensions. Our test drive of the Super 3 Malle Rally Special ($75,660) revealed a collaboration with Malle London, complete with bespoke luggage and adventure accessories. Adorned in Safari Yellow, the Super 3’s beetle-back design commands attention, reminiscent of a bygone era. Despite its diminutive size, the vehicle features ample luggage space, courtesy of flat side panels.

Seated low within the vehicle, drivers navigate by relying on the hood and front fenders as visual cues. This minimalist roadster offers no-frills amenities, with fixed seats and adjustable pedal boxes to accommodate various drivers. While lacking a roof or side curtains, the Super 3 provides unobstructed visibility, albeit with a sense of exposure characteristic of three-wheelers.

The vehicle’s ventilated disc brakes deliver steadfast performance, ensuring precise control even during rapid maneuvers. Agile and responsive, the Super 3 exhibits motorcycle-like agility, earning nods of approval from fellow motorcyclists who embrace it as one of their own. Driving the Super 3 evokes the thrill of touring on a well-appointed motorcycle, augmented by the stability afforded by its semi-enclosed body.

However, navigating potholes demands careful attention, as the vehicle’s three-wheeled configuration requires precise steering to avoid jarring impacts. Although the suspension offers a balanced blend of comfort and responsiveness, encountering potholes at speed can be jarring. Additionally, windblast becomes noticeable at speeds exceeding 60 mph, prompting occupants to consider protective eyewear or headgear.

The Morgan Super 3 may not appeal to everyone, but for those transitioning from motorcycles to a new form of “cycling,” it presents a compelling reason to rediscover the joys of the open road.
