Integral to the Bugatti Bolide’s performance is its brake system, and Bugatti enlisted Brembo to create a system that aligns with the car’s uncompromising nature. The collaboration between Brembo and Bugatti spanned the entire design process, from initial data assessment to dyno testing and on-track analysis. The result of this two-year endeavor is a carbon-carbon brake system that rivals the technology found in elite racing classes such as LMh/LMDh and Formula 1.

The front brakes of the Bolide are a standout feature, representing the largest carbon-carbon brake ever produced. They incorporate two eight-piston monobloc calipers with four high-performance 25 mm pads each, coupled with remarkable 390×37.5 mm carbon discs. The calipers, machined from aluminum alloy and nickel-coated, are a testament to engineering precision.

At the rear, the Bolide boasts two six-piston monobloc calipers mirroring the front, equipped with four high-performance pads each, albeit slightly thinner at 24.5 mm. Complementing these rear calipers are substantial 390×34 mm carbon discs. While not as massive as their front counterparts, the rear brake system’s specifications align with the standards set by the LMDh racing class, showcasing Bugatti’s commitment to delivering unparalleled track performance.

The Chief Operating Officer of Brembo Performance, Mario Almondo, emphasized the unique and exciting challenge of developing the brake system for the Bugatti Bolide. The front caliper, in particular, stands out as an engineering masterpiece, being the largest ever fitted to a racing car. The use of carbon compounds similar to those in Formula 1 allowed for a lightweight design without compromising power.

The development of the brake system underwent rigorous testing, involving simulations, dynamometer sessions, and on-track analyses spanning a two-year period. The data obtained from these tests allowed for continuous refinement of the brake system’s performance, ensuring it could withstand the exhilarating speeds of the Bolide on the track.

The evaluation process delved into potential misuse scenarios, including the Bolide’s ‘Wet’ mode designed for wet driving conditions. This mode makes fine adjustments to the control system, enhancing adaptability on slick surfaces and activating a distinctive rain light reminiscent of Formula 1.
