During the peak of the Covid pandemic, the lesson learned was that physical proximity is not always necessary for productivity. Lamborghini is now taking this concept to an extreme level on the racetrack with a new initiative called Telemetry X. Although currently just a concept, it relies on well-established technology and is a result of collaboration with Accenture, a company with expertise in high-end network solutions.
Introduced at the 2024 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Telemetry X is a prototype system featured in Lamborghini’s new 1,001 hp Revuelto. It comprises three technologies, with the first being Remote Garage. This utilizes the car’s integrated 5G wireless connection to transmit telemetry and high-definition video directly from the vehicle to a driver coach. Unlike traditional track instructors who rely on a stopwatch from the pit wall, Remote Garage allows them to be virtually anywhere, leveraging the car’s connectivity.
The second component of Telemetry X is the Biometric Data System, which incorporates information about the driver’s health, including heart rate and stress level, adding another dimension to potential training feedback. Finally, the Digital Co-Pilot, an advanced artificially intelligent voice assistant, works in harmony with the other technologies. It offers real-time guidance to enhance on-track performance, providing immediate feedback on braking points and cornering speed.
Rouven Mohr, Lamborghini’s chief technical officer, emphasized the role of high-speed 5G data availability in making this concept viable. He explained that with a 4G network’s lower bandwidth and higher latency, the functionalities would be limited, making real-time data exchange challenging.
On the biometrics aspect, Mohr acknowledged the current limited scope of monitored data about the driver. It serves to showcase the technology’s potential and will not involve Lamborghini owning or sharing customers’ health-related data. The information collected will solely be used to understand how driving behavior might influence driving dynamics.
Regarding the production timeline for Telemetry X, nothing is confirmed yet. Mohr clarified that the concept presented is a technological exploration to enhance the driving experience of Lamborghini’s super-sport cars through connectivity. The decision to move it into production has not been finalized.
