The latest Porsche 911 is a true rule-defier.
Porsche, the renowned German automaker, revealed something extraordinary on the opening day of Rennsport Reunion 7 at Laguna Seca: the limited-edition, track-exclusive 911 GT3 R Rennsport. This high-performance masterpiece comes with a seven-figure price tag and a slew of extreme upgrades, rendering it ineligible for competition.
Inside, the cabin retains a stripped-down, race car ambience with a single-seat configuration. However, it incorporates modern features such as displays for monitoring vehicle status and virtual mirrors, along with carbon-fiber trim. The car also includes a robust roll cage and safety features compliant with FIA standards. In a weight-saving measure, Porsche has omitted an air-conditioning system, relying instead on ventilated seating for cooling.
The 911 GT3 R Rennsport is the successor to the modern 935, which was an homage to the legendary race car of the same name from the 1970s. Crafted by Porsche’s Style team, this enhanced vehicle is based on the current 992-generation 911 GT3 R but shares only two body components with the standard car—the hood and roof. Everything else has been completely reimagined. As a result, this high-speed machine boasts a more sculpted body, larger air intakes, and, most notably, a massive rear wing reminiscent of the Brumos 935/77. It’s worth noting that the 911 GT3 R Rennsport isn’t street-legal, so traditional side-view mirrors have been replaced with a digital camera system. Completing the package are a set of 18-inch central-locking BBS wheels shod with Michelin racing tires custom-designed for this model.
Under the hood, you’ll discover the same naturally aspirated 4.2-liter flat-six engine found in the standard 911 GT3 R. Unbound by racing regulations, this powerplant, paired with a six-speed sequential gearbox that directs power to the rear axle, now generates 611 hp compared to the previous 557 hp and redlines at 9,000 rpm. Detailed performance specifications are not provided, but Porsche anticipates the car will achieve a top speed approximately 12 mph higher than the 911 GT3 R (which has a top speed of 184 mph). Additional mechanical enhancements encompass a performance-tuned chassis and suspension system, five-way adjustable racing shock absorbers, and an aluminum monoblock racing system from AP.
Intrigued? It might be wise to secure your order for the 911 GT3 R Rennsport as soon as possible. Porsche intends to produce only 77 units of this track-only marvel. However, be prepared for the substantial price tag. The car, available in one of three exclusive racing liveries, will commence at $1,046,000, which is nearly double the base model’s price.
