Galactica Superyacht: 262-Foot Industrial Masterpiece

It has been well over a year since the magnificent 262-foot all-aluminum flagship of Heesen, known as Galactica and later renamed Genesis per Esysman SuperYachts, has remained stationed in Harlingen, the Netherlands, with its owner conspicuously absent. This superyacht, owned by sanctioned businessman Vagit Alekperov, has yet to be delivered to its owner and continues to occupy the marina. Galactica, or Project Cosmos as it was previously called, garnered significant attention in 2022 due to its colossal size, which led to the yacht encountering multiple challenges in European waters.

This is hardly surprising, considering that the 262-footer represented Heesen’s most ambitious project to date and held the distinction of being the largest all-aluminum yacht ever constructed. Alekperov, a former oil rig worker, was among the pioneering Russian tycoons who devised strategies to safeguard their opulent floating estates from potential seizures. The 114-foot vessel named Space managed a swift return to Russia following a brief voyage from Tuzla, Turkey, to Sochi, Russia. In stark contrast, Galactica, or Genesis, has seen little to no activity for over a year. Nevertheless, it remains a remarkable vessel deserving of exploration.

From the Magnificent Galactica to the Stately Genesis Motoryacht:

Distinguished by its striking bow design, reminiscent of the open jaw of a formidable shark, Heesen’s 262-foot all-aluminum flagship, now known as Genesis, initially captured attention with its distinctive aesthetics. However, it subsequently earned accolades for its exceptional speed and impeccable precision. The yacht featured splendid interior craftsmanship by Sinot Yacht Design & Architecture and exteriors designed by Winch Design. Notably, it achieved a remarkable top speed of 30 knots, a remarkable feat for a vessel with a volume of 1,700 gross tons.

Galactica was powered by four engines, two gearboxes, variable-pitch propellers, and cutting-edge Promas rudders. Upon entering the yacht, guests were greeted by bright and airy interiors achieved through the use of neutral materials, expansive angled windows, and subtle indirect lighting. The decor harmoniously combined neutral woods and light silks with walnut wood accents and stainless-steel detailing.

The vessel accommodated up to 12 guests in six cabins, with the owner’s cabin standing out as the epitome of onboard luxury. The natural and serene decor was punctuated by intricate art-like stitching in the wall panels and headboard.

Other noteworthy features included a certified helideck on the bow and a tender garage with ample space for a custom-designed limousine by Winch. Galactica’s beach club boasted an elegant backlit onyx bar. Sea trials in the North Sea commenced in February 2022, with the original delivery date set for April 2022.

Unfortunately, in April, the owner, Vagit Alekperov, faced sanctions imposed by the UK. These measures also resulted in the seizure of ownership of Heesen, the esteemed luxury yacht builder. Alekperov took the step of transferring company shares to an independent Dutch Foundation.

Businessman Vagit Alekperov: A Wealth Profile:

Vagit Alekperov, whose estimated net worth is $20.9 billion, underwent a remarkable transformation from a former oil rig worker in the Caspian Sea to a deputy minister overseeing the oil industry in the Soviet Union. His journey continued with the acquisition of three substantial ministry-controlled oil fields and the establishment of Lukoil, presently Russia’s largest independent oil company. Alekperov maintained a 28.3% stake in Lukoil, a company that reported revenue of $125.1 billion in 2021. Lukoil, with over 100,000 employees, accounts for approximately 2% of global oil production.

Alekperov acquired Heesen in 2008 through an investment company known as Morcell Ltd, and the Dutch shipyard has since launched over 170 remarkable yachts. Beyond his business pursuits, Alekperov possesses a passion for numismatics, amassing an extensive private collection encompassing more than 700 coins.
