Who better to design a superyacht for the next generation than a rising talent?
Italian designer Davide Benaglia has introduced an innovative 220-foot yacht that caters to young digital natives. Benaglia created the aptly named Hype-R for Feadship’s Young Designer of the Year Award. The competition, open to designers under 28, called for “futuristic” vessels with environmental innovations, cutting-edge technology, and practical layouts. Although Benaglia didn’t win—Indonesian designer Pradipta R. Hakim took the top prize—his concept remains notable.
Hype-R features a sleek, minimalist exterior inspired by video game controllers and other tech gear, with flowing lines and dramatic curves reminiscent of a sports car. “My design language is strongly influenced by car designs, particularly by the renowned masters who have made history, such as Pininfarina and Giugiaro,” Benaglia explained. “Technological products also inspire my designs.”
The yacht has a beam of nearly 37 feet and an interior volume of 1,300 GT, offering plenty of space for relaxation and entertainment. The layout is designed to ensure each area serves a specific purpose. The sundeck is dedicated to the owner and includes a suite with a living area and a private study for remote working at sea. The yacht also has two staterooms and two VIP suites, accommodating up to eight guests.
The exterior boasts several distinct zones. The upper deck is ideal for lounging, with a sunset lounge and romantic arches. The modular beach area aft can be transformed into a cinema, discotheque, or tranquil lounge by the water. The aft deck features an asymmetrical pool cascading over two levels and fold-out platforms to create additional space.
Hype-R is packed with innovative features for tech-savvy seafarers, including state-of-the-art entertainment systems and a high-tech hybrid propulsion system. The diesel-electric setup allows the yacht to reach a top speed of 19 knots and a cruising speed of 16 knots, while also reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
