Review: La Mamounia, Marrakech

What’s the Deal?

La Mamounia recently marked its centennial with a grand celebration, reaffirming its status as one of the world’s premier hotels. Situated near Marrakech’s main souk, the property occupies a vast garden area gifted by the local Sultan to his son. The palatial walled complex, translating to “safe haven,” boasts a rich history, having hosted notable figures like Paul McCartney and Alfred Hitchcock. Following a significant renovation during the pandemic, the hotel underwent additional enhancements, including a striking chandelier sculpture in the lobby.

The Best Room

Among the 200 rooms, six signature suites, and three standalone riads, the pool-facing suites in the main building stand out. These units, facing the lively pool, provide views of the city and gardens, coupled with a sense of privacy. Noteworthy options include Agdal Deluxe rooms, Agdal Suites, or Agdal Executive Suites, with room rates ranging from $900 to $13,000 per night.

Arrival Experience

Arriving at RAK airport, guests are smoothly escorted to the entrance, receiving personalized greetings from every staff member. Welcome drinks await during check-in, which typically occurs on plush red sofas in the souk-like lobby, accompanied by a delectable platter of dates and a bottle of Taittinger.

Butler Service

While standard rooms lack dedicated butlers, prestige and signature suites, along with standalone riads, enjoy the services of a private butler.

Luxury Bedding

The bedding, supplied by Garnier-Thiebaut, a nearly two-century-old French firm, boasts a generous thread count of 600.

Opulent Bathrooms

The sumptuous bathrooms feature deep baths, marble-clad sinks, and showers adorned with intricate Moroccan metalworks. Each room is equipped with a bidet.

Toiletries

Generously sized hotel-branded toiletries by Grasse-based Fragonard are provided, with suites offering supersized 200 ml bottles.

Private Pool and Spa/Gym Facilities

For exclusive use, three private standalone riads feature heated outdoor pools. The spa and gym cover nearly 27,000 square feet, emphasizing indulgence with a dazzling indoor pool, three hammams, and extensive wellness amenities.

Evening Entertainment at the Lobby Bar

Guests can enjoy evenings at the newly renovated Bar Majorelle or the intimate Le Churchill, sipping drinks amidst stylish surroundings.

Room Service Amenities

Room service offers lavish options, including caviar from Paris-based Maison Kaviari. The menu includes indulgent offerings, such as half-sized bottles of Taittinger and a variety of vintage wines.

Potential Purchase of the Hotel

While the hotel was reportedly for sale, details surrounding the Moroccan Railways agency’s 60 percent stake and its potential sale remain undisclosed.

Final Verdict: 9/10

A stay at La Mamounia offers a glamorous and immersive experience, encapsulating the essence of Marrakech. The property, suffused with opulence and a glossy clientele, received high praise with a score of 9/10. While the critique suggests it may be challenging to explore beyond the hotel’s grounds, its undeniable allure and embodiment of Marrakech make it a highly recommended choice for indulgent stays.
