One Week Itinerary in Paraguay

Paraguay, a compact landlocked nation, unfolds a tapestry of stunning waterfalls, a rich history, and vast remote areas where roads are a rarity. As one of South America’s least explored destinations, it offers a refreshing escape from the bustling neighboring countries of Argentina and Brazil. However, the scarcity of tourism infrastructure may pose challenges, demanding patience and adaptability, especially considering extensive bus journeys between destinations. Yet, these bus rides provide a unique opportunity to intimately acquaint oneself with the countryside and possibly engage with locals and vendors offering chipa, a savory, anise-flavored bread.

While the suggested itinerary provides only a glimpse into Paraguay, omitting experiences like the Chaco region or the wetlands of the Rio Paraguay, incorporating these more remote locations could extend the trip by one to two weeks. The itinerary presented here offers a concise tour of the country, encouraging travelers, if possible, to extend their stay and explore some of Paraguay’s untouched gems.

Day 1: Asunción

Upon arrival in Paraguay, whether by plane or bus, withdrawing cash from ATMs at the airport or bus terminal is advised. Utilizing navigation apps like Moovit or seeking guidance from locals, if proficient in Spanish, facilitates finding the appropriate bus to the hotel. Alternatively, opting for a taxi or Uber can save time.

After settling in, visit Mercado Cuatro for a taste of pira caldo, a traditional fish soup, and explore stalls for souvenirs. A short taxi ride leads to the Panteón Nacional de los Héroes and the Museo del Barro, offering insights into Paraguayan history and indigenous art. Dine at Bolsi and attend a jazz show at Dracena, preparing for a picnic lunch the next day.

Day 2: Parqué Nacional Ybycuí

Dedicate the day to Parqué Nacional Ybycuí, experiencing Paraguay’s wild side. A private tour with transportation or a private driver can be arranged. Enjoy breakfast at La Herencia before embarking on a two-and-a-half-hour journey to the park. Activities include swimming in natural pools, hiking to Guaraní and Escondido waterfalls, exploring La Rosada, an iron foundry, and relishing a picnic lunch. Return to Asunción and savor dinner at Pakuri, an acclaimed restaurant fusing indigenous and traditional Paraguayan cuisine.

Day 3: Caacupé and San Bernardino

An early start takes you to Caacupé via a long-distance bus ride. Explore the Catedral Basilica Nuestra Señora de los Milagros, the country’s largest church, and then proceed to San Bernardino. Lunch at Plaza Bernardino Caballero, a walk around Ypacarai Lake, and dinner at Restaurante Oktoberfest provide a taste of the town’s offerings.

Day 4: Encarnación and the Jesuit Ruins

Embark on a journey to Encarnación and explore the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the ruins of the Jesuit Missions at Trinidad and Jesus. Witness the architectural marvels and historical significance of these sites. Return to Encarnación for the night, staying at Luxsur Hotel.

Day 5: San Rafael National Reserve

After breakfast at Luxsur, travel to the San Rafael Nature Reserve for a day of beach time, hiking, and exploring the conservation efforts by ProCosara. Enjoy a sunset swim, dinner at Restaurante Oktoberfest, and an early night.

Day 6: San Rafael

Experience the biodiversity of San Rafael with early morning hikes, birdwatching, and a refreshing swim in the lake. Pick fruits in the citrus grove, have lunch on the cabin’s deck, and embark on the bus journey back to Encarnación. Check-in at Milord Boutique Hotel, enjoy a gourmet dinner, and take an evening walk along the coast.

Day 7: Ciudad del Este and Iguaçu Falls

Take an early morning bus to Ciudad del Este, followed by a visit to the mall area near the Brazilian border. Explore the nearby restaurants, and either cross the Friendship Bridge to Foz do Iguaçu for the iconic Iguazu Falls or opt for a tour of Itaipu Dam and Saltos del Monday. Conclude the day with a dinner of chipa asadors at the farmer’s market.

As your journey in Paraguay concludes, consider a flight back to Asunción or venture into São Paulo for further adventures in Brazil.
