Mark Zuckerberg is reportedly constructing an extensive 1,400-acre estate in Hawaii, resembling a secluded retreat similar to the setting in “Leave the World Behind.” The Meta CEO is said to be investing in this vast compound, named Koolau Ranch, situated in Kauai, Hawaii, which will feature over 30 bedrooms and 30 bathrooms spread across various structures. The land purchases began in August 2014, totaling $170 million, with an additional projected $100 million for construction costs, according to documents obtained by Wired.

At the heart of Koolau Ranch, two mansions will crown a survivalist bunker, encompassing a combined 57,000 square feet. The residences will include elevators, an industrial kitchen, and conference rooms. Soundproofed doors with keypad operation are planned, and the buildings will be connected by a concealed tunnel leading to a 5,000-square-foot underground shelter secured behind a concrete-filled metal door. The bunker is designed with living space, a mechanical room, and an escape hatch. The estate aims for self-sufficiency with an 18-foot-tall water tank and the ability to generate its own energy and food.

Despite its survivalist features, the compound is not solely focused on post-apocalyptic scenarios. Alongside serving as a family retreat, plans include a wellness center featuring a full-size gym, multiple pools, a sauna, a steam room, and a tennis court. Additionally, 11 circular treehouses connected by rope bridges will provide an alternative experience for visitors.

The residential structures within the compound are discreetly hidden from the road behind a six-foot wall and are monitored by 24/7 security guards. Due to the project’s scale and nature, individuals working on Zuckerberg’s property are required to sign strict nondisclosure agreements, a rare occurrence for private projects, according to sources cited by Wired.

The ultimate purpose of Koolau Ranch, whether as a part-time or full-time family retreat, remains undisclosed. However, the compound has reportedly already hosted two corporate events, suggesting that its allure, amenities, and secrets may not remain hidden for long.
