Lewis Hamilton shares a common passion with Cameron Frye’s father from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off—both are absolutely enamored with the Ferrari 250 GT California Spyder. The Formula 1 champion had the opportunity to live out a dream by getting behind the wheel of the iconic car in a recreated scene from the 1986 film. In an Instagram post, Hamilton referred to the Ferrari as “a dream car” and played the role of the garage employee who takes the prized car for a joyride through the streets of Chicago, much like in the movie.

The nearly three-minute clip was created by Hamilton’s production company, Dawn Apollo Films, and features impressive editing that seamlessly inserts the F1 driver into the classic John Hughes film. In the video, Hamilton reassures the characters of Cameron (Alan Ruck), Ferris (Matthew Broderick), and Sloane (Mia Sara) that there’s no need to worry about the car. “I’m a professional,” he tells them before taking off. In his Instagram caption, Hamilton admitted that the clip required “cutting edge tech, production, and planning” to get just right. Interestingly, actor Edward Norton also appears in the video, sitting alongside Hamilton as he takes the Ferrari on a wild ride through Chicago.
Hamilton expressed his excitement for the project, stating that there was “no better way to start the [F1] season than by fulfilling another dream.” The clip reflects Hamilton’s long-held ambition of racing for Ferrari, a dream that has now become a reality. This year marks his debut season with the Prancing Horse after he announced his departure from the Mercedes-AMG Petronas team, with which he had competed since 2013. Hamilton spent his first official day with Ferrari in Maranello last month, meeting with the team and snapping a photo with a Ferrari F40. For the 2025 season, Hamilton will be driving the Ferrari SF-25, and fans are eager to see if he can help end the team’s 17-year title drought.

In addition to the excitement surrounding Hamilton’s new venture with Ferrari, there’s a piece of Ferris Bueller’s memorabilia that also draws attention: the 250 GT California Spyder. The car used in the movie’s driving scenes was put up for auction two years ago. Additionally, another prop car used for the infamous crash scene—where Cameron kicks the convertible, sending it crashing to the ground below his house—was also available at auction in 2022. Cars from the legendary film are rare finds, and these particular pieces of memorabilia are highly coveted.
As Hamilton’s video reminds us, life moves fast, just like in the film. If you don’t take the time to stop and appreciate the moments, you might miss the opportunity to grab an iconic piece of movie history.
