The New Baby Lunar Cruiser From Toyota

In the not-so-distant future, Toyota’s line of SUVs may transcend their terrestrial boundaries and venture into the realms of outer space. The automotive giant from Japan recently unveiled a groundbreaking concept known as the Baby Lunar Cruiser (BLC). Calty Design Research, founded in El Segundo, California, in 1973, has earned a reputation for its bold and innovative designs within the Toyota family. Over the years, it has been responsible for creating some of the brand’s most iconic models, including the second-generation Celica and the modern Tacoma. Operating out of Newport Beach since 1978, Calty has consistently pushed the boundaries of automotive design, producing futuristic concepts like the MX-1 sports car and visionary interpretations of vehicles such as the A80 Supra. These imaginative endeavors, while not always destined for production, have left an indelible mark on Toyota’s design language.

The Baby Lunar Cruiser represents perhaps the most audacious creation to emerge from the Calty studio to date. Drawing inspiration from the classic Land Cruiser, particularly the FJ40, the BLC shares distinct design elements with its terrestrial counterpart. Notably, both vehicles exhibit a similar grille design, an upright stance, and a boxy body shape. However, the concept takes lunar exploration to the next level with its expansive glass canopy, extending almost to the front of the vehicle. This feature provides unparalleled visibility, allowing both the driver and passengers to enjoy unobstructed views of the lunar surface as they traverse the extraterrestrial landscape.

Inside the BLC, Toyota has equipped the rover with cutting-edge technology. A dashboard-spanning augmented reality display offers a futuristic interface, while adjustable spaceframe seats ensure comfort during lunar journeys. M.O.L.L.E. panels provide on-the-fly flexibility, allowing for the customization of interior spaces to meet the astronauts’ specific needs.

While the BLC is undoubtedly a design marvel, technical details remain scarce. Toyota has revealed that the rover will feature four in-wheel motors, allowing for precise and agile maneuvering. Control will be entrusted to twin joysticks, providing extraordinary control over the vehicle’s movements. Additionally, the BLC sports airless tires, designed to conquer the diverse and challenging terrain of the Moon.

It’s worth noting that the Baby Lunar Cruiser is more of a design study than a production-ready vehicle. The likelihood of consumers purchasing a BLC for their lunar excursions is exceedingly slim, if not entirely non-existent. However, this doesn’t mean that Toyota’s innovative concept is without purpose. In 2020, NASA issued a call to the automotive industry for assistance in designing the next lunar rover. Concepts like the BLC, alongside Hyundai’s Tiger X-1 prototype, demonstrate that automakers are indeed interested in contributing to lunar exploration efforts.

While the concept of Toyota SUVs roaming the Moon may seem like science fiction, it serves as a testament to the boundless imagination and innovation of the automotive industry. The BLC not only pays homage to Toyota’s rich heritage but also hints at a future where Earth’s vehicles venture far beyond our planet’s familiar horizons.
