The $5 Million Bugatti Mistral

In a fitting tribute to Bugatti’s iconic W16 engine, the renowned French marque introduced the Mistral, a roadster priced at over $5 million. This exclusive vehicle boasts Bugatti’s signature horseshoe grille, striking LED lighting reminiscent of the one-off $16.5 million La Voiture Noire, a modified version of the distinctive cove-like character line found on all Bugattis, and taillights inspired by the X-wing fighter. Notably, the Mistral forgoes a traditional top, featuring instead what Bugatti designer Jascha Straub describes as an “emergency roof” stored in a designated area, akin to an umbrella.

For the fortunate buyers among the 99 individuals who secured a Mistral, there’s the opportunity to personalize their vehicle in collaboration with Straub, who leads Bugatti’s Sur Mesure individualization program. This program offers a tailored experience for clients, with most opting to visit Bugatti’s headquarters in Molsheim to participate in the customization process.

Straub explains the immersive journey involved in the customization process, which includes tours of Bugatti’s historic buildings and the Ettore Bugatti Chateau, viewing the marque’s collection of historic cars, and engaging with the customization protocol at the atelier. Through extensive discussions, clients provide insights into their preferences, whether it’s a fascination with Bugatti’s racing history, adherence to specific color themes, or a clear vision for their desired specifications.

Balancing the desires of clients with the brand’s standards, Straub employs a delicate approach to guide the conversation towards aesthetically pleasing options. While accommodating clients’ preferences, he ensures that the choices align with Bugatti’s design principles.

Despite the challenge of occasionally declining certain requests, Straub maintains clarity and professionalism in his interactions with clients, emphasizing the importance of constructive feedback in achieving the desired outcome.

As for my personal inspiration, I drew from Bugatti’s illustrious past, particularly the Type 41 “Royale” Roadster, which left a lasting impression from my childhood visits to the Henry Ford Museum. Opting for a more vibrant color scheme, inspired by a historic two-tone-green-over-ivory Bugatti model, I collaborated with Straub to translate this vision into the Mistral’s design.

Utilizing Bugatti’s detailed configurator, I meticulously selected colors and materials for every aspect of the Mistral’s interior and exterior, aiming for a sophisticated and timeless aesthetic. Steering away from my initial inclination for extravagant hues, I opted for classic materials such as light leather and polished aluminum, complemented by subtle detailing and bespoke features.

Ultimately, the finalized design reflects a harmonious blend of elegance and refinement, underscoring Bugatti’s legacy of luxury and craftsmanship. Despite the realization of similarities with my previous vehicle specifications, the consistency in my preferences is evident in the meticulously curated design of the Mistral.
