Spanish Space Balloon From Seville to the Stratosphere

A cutting-edge space balloon could soon be soaring into the skies.

EOS-X Space, Spain’s pioneering space exploration firm, has just unveiled plans for its Spaceship capsules, scheduled to launch passengers to the outer reaches of the stratosphere by 2025.

The company aims to commence flights from its headquarters in Seville and from Abu Dhabi around the third quarter of next year. To realize this ambitious goal, EOS-X Space is investing over $230 million in engineering and development across both locations. Additionally, the firm is currently engaged in a substantial investment round led by U.S. investment bank FTI Capital Advisor.

The Spaceship capsules, constructed from pressurized carbon fiber, were initially conceptualized in 2020. They will be propelled by a zero-emission helium-filled balloon. Each capsule is designed to accommodate seven passengers and one pilot, reaching an altitude of approximately 131,234 feet, or about 25 miles above Earth. Flights are anticipated to last around five hours, commencing with a dawn launch, two hours of ascent, two hours at cruising altitude, and a descent lasting approximately one hour for landing.

Inside the capsule, passengers will experience a luxurious environment complete with plush ergonomic seating, panoramic windows offering breathtaking views of space, an onboard bar, and restroom facilities. Ticket prices are projected to range from €150,000 to €200,000 ($160,550 to $214,060) per passenger. Travelers departing from Seville will also have access to immersive experiences at the company’s SpaceHub Complex on La Isla de la Cartuja, as well as accommodations in an ultra-luxury hotel in the city.

EOS-X Space is not alone in the stratospheric space race. Several other companies, including one French and two American firms, are also developing massive space balloons and pressurized capsules. These crafts share similar designs and capabilities, prompting competition among the companies to offer the most luxurious amenities. For instance, U.S.-based Space Perspective plans to include a “Space Spa” aboard its Spaceship Neptune, while French competitor Zephalto intends to provide an onboard menu crafted by a Michelin-starred chef. Meanwhile, American firm World View is highlighting in-flight dining and bar services. The race among these firms is clearly heating up.

In summary, EOS-X Space is on track to revolutionize space tourism with its innovative Spaceship capsules, promising passengers an unforgettable journey to the edge of the stratosphere. With significant investments underway and plans for inaugural flights taking shape, the future of stratospheric travel is indeed looking up.
