Introducing Hydrogen Hypercar Prototype

Although the Hyperion XP-1 hypercar isn’t available for direct purchase yet, one of its prototypes is now up for auction.

SBX Cars is set to offer one of the seven development vehicles utilized during the creation of the hydrogen-powered hypercar. While this prototype lacks the final version’s space-grade powertrain, it promises to be a distinctive offering among the vehicles available for bidding this spring.

In 2020, Hyperion, based in Orange County, unveiled an attention-grabbing hypercar featuring groundbreaking hydrogen fuel-cell technology. The XP-1 is propelled by four electric motors powered by a fuel cell linked to a sizable hydrogen tank. This unique configuration boasts an output exceeding 2,000 horsepower, a range of over 1,000 miles on a single charge, and a rapid five-minute recharge time. Despite generating significant buzz upon its debut, more than three years later, it has yet to enter production with no indication of when that might change.

Consequently, this auction represents the best opportunity for a collector to acquire the vehicle. Although the prototype lacks the highly anticipated hydrogen fuel-cell powertrain, it remains operational as a “show car” thanks to its electric propulsion system, as stated in the listing. While precise power figures are not provided, it’s reasonable to assume that the prototype likely doesn’t match the performance capabilities of the production version, which can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 2.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 221 mph.

Visually, the car delivers on its promises. Its design elements draw comparisons to the Bugatti Chiron and Hispano Suiza Carmen, yet it exudes a futuristic aesthetic reminiscent of something from a science fiction film rather than a conventional road car. Finished in satin titanium and sky blue, it features V-wing doors inspired by the “Winged Victory of Samothrace” sculpture, along with adjustable aerodynamic air blades that function as solar panels.

Inside the two-seater cabin, the extravagance continues, showcasing a 360-degree panoramic cockpit, a large infotainment screen, and luxurious midnight blue leather upholstery. SBX Cars asserts that both the exterior and interior are in excellent condition, despite minor imperfections.

The winning bidder of this auction will receive a special invitation to order and customize the final XP-1 if it ever enters production. Additionally, they will have the option to trade in the prototype, using its value as a down payment for the finished hypercar.
