Certainly it’s not surprising that Robert F. Smith, a Colorado-born multibillionaire with two Malibu homes, has decided to sell one. In a matter of days, news broke that the 57-year-old Columbia Business School alum paid $48.2 million to Rockstar energy drink founder Russ Weiner for a lavish Palm Beach estate built by Tiger Woods’ ex-wife Elin Nordegren. A four-year criminal tax probe accused Smith of concealing hundreds of millions in offshore accounts in order to evade taxes, and he agreed to pay $140 million last month to settle the case. The Malibu property was purchased by Smith and his wife Hope Dworaczyk for $18.7 million in 2018. The house was never actually occupied; it was rented out short-term for private parties and quick stays, similar to Airbnb.
The two-story house on Malibu’s exclusive Carbon Beach was constructed in 1956 but has clearly been renovated over the years. The house sits directly between roaring Pacific Ocean and bustling Pacific Coast Highway. In addition to an electronic driveway gate, the residence boasts an expansive great room with wood-plank ceilings, a curvacious wet bar, and an early-2000s kitchen with granite countertops, stainless appliances, and custom cabinets. In the house, there are four bedrooms, all of which have ensuite bathrooms. While the three bedrooms on the main floor are only mother-in-law sized at best, the lavish upstairs master suite boasts a sitting area, dressing room, and a huge bathroom with a soaking tub, dual vanities, and an oversized steam shower to make up for it.
Carbon Beach’s sublime setting is the property’s biggest selling point, not its bedrooms. The home also has ample off-street parking – there’s a two-car garage and separate motorcourt for three more vehicles. Larry Ellison, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Eli Broad, and Michael Milken are some of the closest neighbors within sugar-borrowing distance.Despite his IRS troubles, Smith has established himself as a generous philanthropist in recent years despite his $5 billion net worth, according to Forbes. In 2016, he was appointed board chairman of Carnegie Hall after giving tens of millions to cancer research charities. Both Democrat and Republican politicians have received lavish gifts from him.
In addition to the Carbon Beach mansion for sale, Smith has a spectacular triplex penthouse in New York City, plus a mansion in Austin, Texas. Since then, he has been renovating the Chelsea condo he purchased for million, much to the dismay of his neighbors. In 2016, Smith purchased from former “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” cast member Yolanda Hadid a $19.5 million blufftop Malibu mansion.
