More than a decade since Kiefer Sutherland sold his historic 19th-century townhouse in Manhattan’s West Village for $17.5 million—remarkably within 24 hours of its listing—the property has reappeared on the market, now seeking $20.5 million. The residence, bearing a gilded sign above the entrance reading “Beau Geste” (meaning “beautiful gesture”), was originally built in the early 1800s and has since been updated to blend period charm with contemporary comfort.
Sutherland initially acquired the Greek Revival-style townhouse in 2008 for $8.25 million. Four years later, he sold it to David Matlin, a distressed-asset adviser, and his wife, Lisa. The Matlins later transferred ownership in 2015 for $17.75 million to a trust associated with Thomas Brodsky, a New York City-based real estate developer and property manager.
Kiefer Sutherland’s Kitchen
During his ownership, Sutherland collaborated with designer Steven Gambrel to remodel the red-brick, multi-level home, which now offers five bedrooms and seven bathrooms. The residence combines classic architectural elements with modern upgrades, including a staircase and an elevator connecting the floors. Marketing materials emphasize the property’s unique blend of historic detail and contemporary convenience. On the first floor, visitors are welcomed by a mudroom that leads into a bright, all-white kitchen equipped with premium appliances. Adjacent to the kitchen is a family room featuring one of the home’s eight fireplaces and offering access to a landscaped courtyard garden. A cozy breakfast nook with banquette seating and a wine fridge enhances this space, making it ideal for casual dining.
The main entrance on the second floor opens to formal living and dining areas, setting an elegant tone for entertaining. Occupying the entire third level, the primary suite boasts a private terrace, two spacious walk-in closets, and a luxurious bathroom outfitted with marble accents, dual vanities, a built-in soaking tub, and a separate shower. The fourth and fifth floors house four additional ensuite bedrooms, providing ample space for guests or family members. A staircase leads to the rooftop terrace, a true retreat with lounging and dining areas, an outdoor kitchen, and even an outdoor shower.
Adding further appeal, the property features a fully finished basement. Here, future owners will find a wine cellar, laundry facilities, and a cedar closet, all of which contribute to the home’s modern conveniences while retaining its historical charm. The listing is managed by real estate agents Chris Poore, Serena Boardman, and Eyal Dagan from Sotheby’s International Realty, who are showcasing the property’s distinct appeal to prospective buyers.
Since his time in Manhattan, Sutherland has relocated and invested in various properties. In early 2024, he sold a modest English Tudor-style home in Los Angeles’ trendy Atwater Village neighborhood for $1.6 million. Prior to that, in 2022, he quietly sold his longtime Toluca Lake estate to actors Macauley Culkin and Brenda Song in an off-market deal for $8 million. Around the same time, he purchased a 73-acre retreat in New York’s scenic Hudson Valley for $5 million.
