More than 20 years after his passing at the age of 77, a portion of Charles M. Schulz’s former estate in Northern California has become available for purchase. The legendary creator of the beloved Peanuts comic strip acquired the 28-acre property in Sebastopol, Sonoma County, during the peak of his career in the early 1960s. He later designed and built a residence known as Coffee Grounds, named for its location on Coffee Lane. Last year, the part of the estate housing Schulz’s studio was sold for nearly $4 million, and now, the main home on an adjacent parcel is listed for just under $3.3 million.
Schulz and his family called the midcentury-modern home their residence from the mid-1960s until the early ’70s, after relocating from Minnesota to California. In 1985, the home was sold to the late artist Jack Stuppin and his wife Diane, who then renovated it extensively. The house, designed by the local architectural firm Steele & Van Dyk, is constructed from redwood, Douglas fir, and lava stone. The spacious home spans more than 6,800 square feet and includes six bedrooms and seven bathrooms, still showcasing a vintage Jack-and-Jill bath that once belonged to Schulz, complete with a classic hair-washing sink from his era.
Nestled on over nine acres of land, the residence is surrounded by towering trees and picturesque vineyards, approximately 15 minutes west of Santa Rosa. The split-level design features a cozy living room with a fireplace, which leads to a combined entertaining and dining area with sliding glass doors opening to an expansive deck that offers breathtaking views. The kitchen is equipped with an eat-in island finished in ceramic tile, along with a cozy breakfast nook that creates a welcoming, casual dining space.
The primary suite is a true highlight of the home, with a striking double-sided white brick fireplace that connects to a lounge area, providing access to a private deck. The suite also boasts a spacious walk-in closet and an en-suite bath with dual vanities, a soaking tub, and a glass-enclosed shower. The home also includes a dedicated office space, ideal for working from home, as well as a lower level that features a game room and a wine cellar, adding to the home’s charm and functionality.
Outdoors, the grounds are beautifully landscaped with gardens, adding a tranquil feel to the property. A flagstone sundeck surrounds the swimming pool, making it a perfect spot for relaxation or entertaining. The property also includes a seasonal pond, expansive pastures, and sculptures of Peanuts characters Snoopy and Woodstock, created in Schulz’s honor. A separate guesthouse provides additional living space for visitors, while a two-car garage and a carport with space for up to four vehicles offer ample parking and storage.
This estate, which blends midcentury architecture with rich natural surroundings, offers a unique opportunity to own a piece of history tied to one of America’s most iconic cartoonists. With its serene location, stunning views, and charming amenities, the property offers both privacy and a connection to the artistic legacy of Charles M. Schulz.
