New Electric Catamaran Has a Passenger Capsule

Platypus Craft’s underwater ambitions are on the verge of becoming reality.

The French company’s 28-foot semi-submersible catamaran, first introduced as a concept over a decade ago, is expected to set sail by early 2025.

Platypus has partnered with Norwegian start-up Evoy to produce electric propulsion systems for the first production models. “We are thrilled to collaborate with Evoy, a company that shares our commitment to sustainability,” said Platypus Craft founder and CEO François-Alexandre Bertrand. “This partnership will enable us to expand the possibilities of marine exploration.”

The Platypus lineup includes several vessels capable of cruising above or below the water, such as the entry-level Sanctuary model, the sophisticated Yacht Edition, and the rugged Tourer variant. Each vessel features a sleek catamaran-style hull and a “basket” that lowers into the water, equipped with six seats and user-friendly breathing devices, allowing passengers to explore underwater without diving certifications.

The Yacht Edition will be powered by twin Evoy Breeze outboards, generating 120 horsepower. These electric motors are emission-free and eliminate fuel slicks, bilge water, and noise, minimizing impact on the marine environment. The vessel can cruise at 15 knots, reach a top speed of 25 knots on the surface, and travel underwater at a relaxed pace of three to five knots. It is equipped with two 63 kW batteries, offering a range of 30 to 80 nautical miles, and a dedicated diving battery pack providing six to 12 hours of underwater autonomy.

Platypus launched a prototype in the Mediterranean in 2021, proving its potential for eco-tourism and marine research. The 23-foot trimaran has logged 700 hours on the water in Noumea, Corsica, and the south of France. It has also participated in environmental expeditions led by the Blue Odyssey Initiative, observing and mapping the seabed. Imagine the impact a whole fleet could have.
