Sierra Space, a Colorado-based aerospace firm, is pioneering a visionary concept: an inflatable space station set to replace the aging International Space Station (ISS) by the end of this decade. This innovative habitat, named LIFE (Large Integrated Flexible Environment), represents the company’s bold leap into the future of space exploration and living.

The journey begins with Sierra Space’s Dream Chaser, the world’s first winged commercial spaceplane, slated for a September launch to deliver cargo to the ISS under a $3 billion contract with NASA. Following this initial phase, Sierra Space’s focus shifts to LIFE, a revolutionary inflatable habitat designed to support extended stays for scientists, artists, and others in space.

At its sprawling headquarters and research facility in Louisville, Colorado, Sierra Space showcased a full-scale prototype of LIFE during a recent visit by Robb Report. This donut-shaped structure, resembling a cross between a yurt and a hot air balloon, is built from a high-strength matrix of “softgoods” materials that become rigid under pressure. Planned to launch inside a conventional rocket and inflate in orbit, LIFE will expand into spacious living quarters comparable in size to a three-story building.

Inside the prototype, visitors experienced a glimpse of the future. Sierra Space’s chief safety officer, Angie Wise, highlighted the ergonomic design and ample space of the interior, emphasizing its potential comfort in microgravity. Equipped with ergonomic seating, panoramic views through large windows, and amenities like a small library area with a floating hammock, the habitat promises a comfortable environment for scientific research and relaxation alike.

Sierra Space envisions LIFE as a hub for cutting-edge research in microgravity conditions, ideal for advancing technologies ranging from 3-D-printed human organs to revolutionary battery chemistries. CEO Tom Vice underscores the habitat’s potential to transform various industries, positioning Sierra Space at the forefront of innovation in space technology.

Beyond its initial prototype, Sierra Space plans to develop larger LIFE modules. LIFE 5000, for instance, will exceed the volume of the entire ISS upon deployment, offering expansive space for future commercial activities in orbit. Partnering with Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin, Sierra Space aims to establish Orbital Reef, a commercial space station resembling a mixed-use business park, by 2030. This ambitious project envisages a space-based ecosystem including hotels, restaurants, and research laboratories, fostering a new era of space-based commerce and exploration.

Technical challenges have not deterred Sierra Space. The LIFE habitat’s multi-layered textile matrix, primarily composed of Vectran—a material stronger than steel when pressurized in orbit—provides robust protection against micro-meteoroids, space debris, and radiation. Endurance tests at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center validated its durability, exceeding safety thresholds for internal pressure and external impacts.

Meanwhile, Sierra Space continues to advance its Dream Chaser fleet. The company’s first spaceplane, Tenacity, stands ready at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center for its inaugural flight, equipped to transport cargo to and from the ISS. With its unique ability to land horizontally on commercial runways, Tenacity represents a breakthrough in space transport logistics, capable of returning with valuable experimental data and disposing of station waste during reentry.

Looking ahead, Sierra Space plans to expand its global network of landing sites, facilitating rapid transport of supplies and personnel worldwide. This strategic initiative aims to leverage Dream Chaser’s versatility, transporting payloads for industries ranging from biotechnology to semiconductor manufacturing, while advancing global solutions for humanity’s most pressing challenges.
