The historic coronation site of one of history’s most formidable military leaders, Alexander the Great, has once again opened its doors to visitors. The Palace of Aigai in Vergina, Greece, where Alexander was crowned King of Macedonia approximately 2,400 years ago, welcomed guests on Sunday. Officially known as the Royal Metropolis of the Macedonians, this historical property covers approximately 161,500 square feet, making it the largest building in the country during its heyday. Constructed primarily by Philip II of Macedonia, the father of the young king, in the 4th century BCE, the palace has undergone extensive restoration efforts by the Greek government.
After 16 years of meticulous work, assistance from the European Union, and an investment exceeding $21.9 million, the palace has been rejuvenated. The restoration project involved excavation, documentation, and the preservation of unearthed artifacts. Restoration efforts extended to 15,000 square feet of mosaics, marble flooring, and ancient columns, all while maintaining the site’s classical appearance.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis officially inaugurated the revitalized palace on Friday, posing against the backdrop of towering columns and vibrant stone floors. Mitsotakis emphasized the historical significance, stating, “It is the place where Alexander the Great was crowned king, a short while after his father’s assassination, to start his glorious campaign.” Alexander ascended to the throne at the age of 20 in 336 B.C., embarking on military campaigns that spanned from Greece to Egypt, Iran, northern India, and central Asia. His reign laid the groundwork for Greek influence in the eastern Mediterranean for the subsequent millennium. The Palace of Aigai met its demise in 148 BCE at the hands of the Romans.
Highlighting the global importance of such monuments, Mitsotakis remarked, “The importance of such monuments transcends local boundaries, becoming property of all humanity. And we as the custodians of this precious cultural heritage, we must protect it, highlight it, promote it, and at the same time expand the horizons revealed by each new facet.”
