Curious about the visual embodiment of $300 million? Look no further than Hawaii.
For those acquainted with the venerable St. Regis Princeville gracing the shores of Hanalei Bay, prepare for a revelation after its grand reopening in April. Not only has it undergone a comprehensive redesign, but it has also assumed a new identity as the 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay.
Let us embark on a journey to unveil the transformative allocation of these substantial funds.
A Harmonious Connection with Nature
The resort’s towering and pristine façade has been meticulously redesigned to harmonize with the lush natural surroundings that have long been its backdrop.
Foliage now adorns a significant portion of the beachfront exterior, and the resort’s biophilic design has expanded the outdoor space of the 252-room property (inclusive of 51 suites, three of which boast private terraces) by 30 percent. The reimagined architecture has relinquished traditional roofs, giving rise to lush open-air lounges adorned with meandering streams, indigenous ferns, palm trees, kukui nut trees, responsibly sourced teak, and puka lava rock, creating a tranquil ambiance. Rooftop gardens contribute to cooling this carbon-neutral property while providing a source of fresh vegetables and micro-greens for its three restaurants.
The narrative continues within, where the interior, crafted by Nicole Hollis for 1 Hotel, embodies a distinctly Hawaiian essence. Handwoven lighting fixtures, reclaimed wood ceilings, basalt flooring, local artwork, and traditional punai daybeds adorn the space. These daybeds, framed by generously proportioned windows that open to the breathtaking sight of the liquid-gold sunset over Mount Makana, offer an ideal vantage point. Guests may also indulge in cocktails or dining at the in-house Japanese restaurant, Welina Terrace, or savor local Kauai cuisine at 1 Kitchen while gazing upon the crescent beach and its world-class vista.
The Idyllic Setting
Positioned on Kauai’s North Shore, the resort occupies a peerless location. A swimmable beach beckons directly in front, a renowned surf break awaits a short paddle away, and access to exceptional hiking trails is readily available. Furthermore, guests can explore the nearby Anini Beach, celebrated for its sea turtles and effortless snorkeling. For those seeking to venture beyond, the resort offers access to one of its Audi e-trons for a five-mile drive to the charming town of Hanalei, where shopping and local culinary delights, such as margaritas and tapas at Bar Acuda or the favored poke bowl at the Dolphin Restaurant, await.
An Abundance of Activities
Distinguished by its comprehensive array of activities, the resort surpasses many others on the Garden Island. In addition to its two splendid pools, 1 Hotel has elevated its exclusive spa, fitness facilities, and mind/body programs within this flagship establishment. Resort guests can partake in a diverse selection of complimentary activities, ranging from guided waterfall hikes and e-bike tours to crystal healing meditations, rum tastings, and mai-tai mixology. Younger guests have access to Seedlings, the kids’ club, where they can engage in crafts, sandcastle building, and wildlife-related activities. Outrigger canoe excursions and surfing lessons are also readily arranged.
The Spa
For those inclined toward a more leisurely pursuit than aquatic adventures, the Bamford Wellness Spa is an oasis of rejuvenation. This particular location incorporates native Hawaiian medicinal plants, including comfrey and noni, into select treatment rituals, facials, and massages. The spa’s offerings encompass a sensory deprivation tank, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, meditation pods, and various touchless therapies. Additionally, a 10,000-square-foot Anatomy gym and an outdoor free weight area, constructed from invasive Albizia wood sourced from a local forest and overlooking the beach, await fitness enthusiasts. The forthcoming Vitahealth integrated medicine program, featuring hormone balancing, nutritional guidance, and other health assessments, is scheduled to open later this summer.
Alexis Eaton, Director of Marketing and Programming for the resort, affirms, “This property truly sets the standard for what the 1 Hotels Brand represents and, more than ever, places wellness at the forefront through immersive transformational experiences.
